Wild Honey – Gold Leaf (Gummy Soul Remix)
“Melancholic hip-hop goodness from the school of Gummy Soul and dreamy pop for the horn rim jockeys from Algodón Egipcio – it doesn’t get much hipper than this.” -Lovemonk

Here’s what the good folks over at Lovemonk had to say about it:
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: we are head over heels with Wild Honey. How could we not? His album “Epic Handshakes And A Bear Hug”, apart from sporting a rather fantastic title, is a delicious slice of intimate, folk-tinged pop taking influences from anything from The Zombies to Michel Legrand and Disney soundtracks. Take “Gold Leaf”, for instance: a quirky, sweet and lo-fi bossa nova ditty with gorgeous boy-girl vocals. It could come straight from that “The Party” soundtrack. If Hrundi V. Bakshi could sing, that is. And “Kings Of Tomorrow” is just like opening the window on a Sunday morning and the day comes running at you shrieking with joy, arms stretched out ready to hug you and jump around like children at a garden party.
On this here 7”, Amerigo Gazaway, the man from the utterly fantastic Gummy Soul collective and one of Kanye West’s new favourite producers, slows “Gold Leaf” down, emphasises Anita Steinberg’s vocal and gets rid of the Carioca influence, and almost all of the instrumentation, for that matter, in favour of a more melancholic vibe, with a simple but effective hip-hop beat and some sweet keyboards. On the flipside, dream-pop boy wonder Cheky, a.k.a. Algodón Egipcio (Lefse Records), turns “Kings Of Tomorrow” into a gliding, then slightly euphoric piece of synthy goodness with Robin Guthrie-like guitars, which will have your inner hipster wave their horn-rimmed glasses in the air like they just don’t care.”

NPR’s Best of 2011
Amerigo Gazaway’s Fela Soul has been named one of NPR’s top 5 best Bandcamp albums of 2011! Get the full scoop below.
Taken from NPR Music:
Fela Soul is the sort of mash-up album that never gets tired. The concept is fresh and simple: Take the music of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and marry it with the raps of De La Soul. Fela Soul is the work of Gummy Soul producer Amerigo Gazaway, who makes his ingredients sound as if they were born to be together. (There’s also an instrumental version of the album that you can also download for free.) Nashville’s Gummy Soul, a boutique soul and hip-hop label, was founded by Walter Clark and started as a radio show on Vanderbilt’s WRVU.

Soul Train Best of 2011
Amerigo Gazaway’s Fela Soul has been named one of Soul Train’s Top 5 Best Independent Soul Albums of 2011! Check it.
Taken from www.soultrain.com
With a surfeit of mash-up concept albums clogging the Internet, Gregg Gillis success stories are sometimes hard to come by. However, Gummy Soul producer Amerigo Gazaway is not a turntablist bounded by mere convention. Originally released for free download on Bandcamp, Gazaway’s Fela Soul is a boisterous production retrofitted with samples from cult hip-hop favorites De La Soul and Afrobeat creator Fela Kuti. But what’s most remarkable is that the wide-ranging stylistic format never feels overcooked. Fittingly enough, the 9-track album opens with De La Soul’s “Stakes is High”, a 1996 kiss-off to hip-hop commercialism. Fela Soul starts a good track record for Nashville’s independent Gummy Soul label, an idea that began on Vanderbilt University’s bygone terrestrial radio station WRVU.

Who We Are
“We are the 99 percent. We are getting kicked out of our homes. We are forced to choose between groceries and rent. We are denied quality medical care. We are suffering from environmental pollution. We are working long hours for little pay and no rights, if we’re working at all. We are getting nothing while the other 1 percent is getting everything. We are the 99 percent.”
Taken from wearethe99percent.tumblr.com
“My ‘American Dream’ was hijacked by a system designed to disproportionately benefit those on top of the economic food chain. As a Dean’s List student with the top award for my major, I graduated from college this summer to virtually zero opportunities. The 99% aren’t lazy freeloaders but rather hard working Americans simply looking to fulfill their potential. I fully support the movement because our struggles are shared. I am the 99%.”

@questlove
Since it’s release on September 13th, the response for our new project “Fela Soul” has been nothing short of amazing. With “Fe La Soul,” we hoped to showcase our production, while increasing people’s knowledge of two very important artistic forces, and your support and sharing has helped us to achieve that goal.
With combined listen/downloads of over 150,000 and growing, your support proves that there will always be a place for quality music. Here @ Gummy Soul, we are dedicated to providing you with the best content that we can create, and we will work hard to maintain the level of quality and passion that we displayed on this project.
As a token of our appreciation, we have included a special “Fela Soul” bonus track featuring lyrics by Amerigo Gazaway and production from fellow Gummy Soul artist Wally Clark. We made this song as thank you note; as a way of expressing our gratitude to all of our newly acquired fans.
We are eternally grateful for your interest and continued support for our music, and we hope you enjoyed listening to the project as much as we enjoyed making it.
Fela Soul
What do you get when you put together afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and rap pioneers De La Soul? You get Fela Soul; musical tapestry created by Gummy Soul artist Amerigo Gazaway. More than just a clever title, Fela Soul is an 8-track, 33 minute journey into the world of afrobeat rhythms, funky horn riffs, and classic hip-hop gems. Using dozens of hand-picked samples from the Nigerian instrumentalist and political figure Fela Kuti, and 8 carefully-chosen acapellas from the Native Tongue rap trio De La Soul, Amerigo seamlessly intertwines the two into something completely new and original.
Download the entire album for free, along with liner notes and album commentary below.
“I came up with the concept for this project in fall of 2010. I wanted to follow through with it not only because it was a good idea, but because of the powerful impact both these artists have had on me and my music. Afrobeat, jazz, funk, and hip-hop are already so interconnected, and I always thought it would be exciting to work on a project that combined all of these elements together.”
“I hope this project will help to bridge the gap between hip-hop and afrobeat, and serve an introduction for hip-hop fans and music fans alike who are unfamiliar with Fela Kuti or De La Soul’s music.”
